Early Head Start programs that enroll pregnant women must conduct a newborn visit with each mother and baby within two weeks of birth. The purpose of the visit is to:
- Check on the well-being of both the mother and her baby
- Identify any health, mental health, or safety concerns
- Make referrals if needed
This visit does not take the place of well-baby visits with the newborn’s primary care provider or replace medical care for the mother. Head Start programs should work with families to schedule the newborn visit and be flexible if they need to change the time.
See Services to Enrolled Pregnant Women, 45 CFR 1302.80 Subpart H for topics to discuss during the visit.
Tips and Strategies for Conducting an Effective Newborn Visit
- Decide which staff member will make the newborn visit to the family.
- Set goals for the visit with the family to make sure the conversation includes required topics and answers the family’s questions.
- Follow up promptly on any referrals or resources the family needs to address health, mental health, and safety concerns.
